This info-graphic highlights some of the effects that poverty has on Native American people. Not only did I include a statistic on poverty, I included other aspects like health insurance, alcohol related deaths, and suicide that are all part of poverty. Alcoholism, suicide, and depression are all side effects of poverty. In the book, we see a lot of depression and alcoholism from Junior's family and from the people that live on the reservation. The graph shows how much higher these problems face native american households than the national average. Indeed, poverty often forces you to see the world as a bleak and hopeless place. In fact, it is these statistics that Mr. P probably had in mind when he told Junior he needed to leave the reservation in order to escape the impending death that was sure to follow if he stayed. The contrast between the national average and the reality for Native American families is stark and troubling. No wonder Alexie spent so much time talking about poverty and its affects throughout the novel.
